Jeep - Boat - Jeep
Quickest way to go! Leaves daily from Monteverde / La Fortuna. Departs at 8:00 am from Monteverde and 8:30 am from La Fortuna. This trip takes about 3 hours and is door to door. As the name suggests this is a taxi ride to the lake, a boat across the lake and then another taxi on to your hotel. 2.5 hours by car and .5 hours by boat. Public Bus To Monteverde From…
San Jose
The public bus leaves San Jose at 6:30 am and 2:30 pm. The bus stop is located at the old Puntarenas stop. Same location as the Tilaran busses. The ride takes an average of 5 hours and costs just under 1,500 Colones. The bus makes a 15-minute pit stop just after Lagartos before finishing the winding road up to Monteverde. Keep an eye on your luggage!
Puntarenas
There are 2 bus routes coming from Puntarenas to Monteverde.
One public bus leaves Puntarenas at 2:15 pm and goes via Lagartos.
The other departs a little earlier and goes via Las Juntas.
The ride takes an average of 3.5 hours and costs less than 900 Colones.
Guanacaste
Two of the busses mentioned above turn off at Lagartos. By taking any bus from Liberia towards San Jose or Puntarenas you can get off at Lagartos and catch one of the 3 public busses that pass through there daily. If coming from the north you want to get off after the bridge of Rio Lagartos. The road to Monteverde will be on the left. Busses from San Jose pass through at approx. 8:40 am and 4:40 pm. The Puntarenas bus will pass around 3:20 pm.
From most other locations you will first need to reach one of the places mentioned.
Private Transfers:
There are private transfers available to Monteverde from anywhere in Costa Rica. Vehicles range from 15 passenger minivans to 4x4 ‘jeeps’. Services are hotel to hotel with driver and air conditioning.
Collective Transfers:
There is a collective transport leaving San Jose at 8:00 am. The ride is around 4 hours. Rate is $30 per person. Pick up and drop off at most hotels. Afternoon trips are some times available.
